Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the sole TLD intended for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domain names remained running.
